Herbert Butterfield Essay
In this book, the author focuses more on the works of Herbert Butterfield rather than his personal life and explores Butterfieldââ¬â¢s influence that reaches beyond what he perceived as ââ¬Å"presentmindednessâ⬠. McIntire uses Butterfieldââ¬â¢s private papers giving the reader a very close accounting of this historianââ¬â¢s thoughts and writings. His career in the academic field was impressive. Graduating from Cambridge in 1922 he went on to become regius professor, master of Peterhouse, and serve as vice-chancellor of the university. He grew up in the industrial town of West Riding where he and his family came from a Methodist background. His first job offer that he applied for after graduating was at the secondary school in Lampeter. He did get the job, but turned it down because he believed the teaching position would have been a dismal and uninspiring job. Butterfield believed, according to the author, that it would not have helped his writing. He had previously considered becoming a Methodist preacher, like his father. Even discussing the matter with the principal of Wesley House, and together decided he did not have the qualities of a preacher. He had aspirations of Knighthood and becoming president of the Historical society, this and all that was just part of McIntire writings of the man, Herbert Butterfield. The author takes the reader through each step of Butterfieldââ¬â¢s careers throughout his life. In 1979, McIntire had his own encounter with Herbert Butterfield while he was editing and publishing part of the historianââ¬â¢s essays on Christianity and history. McIntire is able to use secondary sources with friends, critics, colleagues and family that do fit into his writing quite well. Butterfield had an early exposure to Harold Temperley and his writings reflected this, McIntire wrote in his book. Butterfieldââ¬â¢s experiences inspired his first academic publication on the minutiae of Napoleonic diplomacy. Butterfield explained that the research technique he used as free of religious, ethnic, and ideological partisanship. A scientific history approach was his theory, but there is an interesting fact that Butterfield did not write another book from 1929 to 1968 on that subject or anything to enhance that topic. Another interesting fact was in the next fifty years of his life he kept assuring everyone that he was working on a book about Charles James Fox, but that book never came about. In addition, it caused guilt throughout Butterfieldââ¬â¢s career, McIntire wrote. Soon though with Butterfieldââ¬â¢s love of the legacy of Lord Action, his attentions focused from technical history towards the broader questions of historical thought. McIntire shows how all of Butterfieldââ¬â¢s major works came from ââ¬Å"The Wig Interpretation of Historyâ⬠and out of that came his numerous other writings ââ¬Å"The Origins of Modern Scienceâ⬠, ââ¬Å"Man on His Pastâ⬠and his inaugural address as Regius Professor, ââ¬Å"The Present State of Historical Scholarshipâ⬠. In the book, the author points to Butterfieldââ¬â¢s status as an outsider that influenced his behavior as being a dissenter. ââ¬Å"His idiosyncratic Methodism reinforced his sense of self as a clever lower middle class grammar school boy with a funny Yorkshire accent immersed in an academic environment filled with Anglican gentlemen bred at exclusive public schools. The result was a reactive compulsion to every rule; an attitude that did not always serve Butterfield well for it contained elements of the childishness. As J. H.à Plumb noted, deep down he loved to shockâ⬠(McIntire 86). McIntire portrayal is more of a shy and humble man, instead of what many viewed him. They considered his views as more of a moral and intellectual vanity of a self-centered person. In addition, believing that ââ¬Å"his own views as the wave of the future in historical studyâ⬠(McIntire 151) once again showing his complex problem. At one point, Butterfield publicly praised Marxist historical method but many believed he did not know what he was talking about when he said it. In the 1930ââ¬â¢s Butterfield publicly praised Marxist historical method, although it is not clear from the authorââ¬â¢s writings if Butterfield, a devout Christian, really understood the core of Marxism. During the era of appeasement, Butterfield criticized any moral judgments directed at Nazi Germany, wishing instead ââ¬Å"that the enemies of the Fascists could be gentlerâ⬠(McIntire 105). He never lived down his foolish decision to undertake a lecture tour of Germany after the 1938 Munich Conference. The question he gave seemed to blame Britain for the conflict. ââ¬Å"What did we do wrong? What could we have done to prevent the Germans from feeling that they must turn to Hitler? â⬠(McIntire 112). Butterfield admitted proudly that he almost never voted. Political quietism supposedly came from Butterfieldââ¬â¢s principled insistence upon the segregation of history from moral and political questions, the core of his argument in ââ¬Å"The Whig Interpretation of Historyâ⬠. In the 50ââ¬â¢s and 60ââ¬â¢s, Butterfield vocally denounced U.à S. foreign policy, while demanding with Soviet Russia and unilateral disarmament by the West. He denied any inconsistency saying, ââ¬Å"I am as an historian against all governmentsâ⬠(McIntire 170). I felt the book was more of the moral standings of the man. Butterfield did write on science, religion, and historiography, but I felt the author lacked showing the connection it had to events in Butterfieldââ¬â¢s life and how the connection was to the academic or scientific community. The reader swims through explanation after explanation of the same concept as McIntire analyses a succession of publications in chronological order, with not enough of Butterfieldsââ¬â¢s own words to support. Maybe that way some light on the thoughts of the man instead of McIntireââ¬â¢s interpretations. The book was difficult to follow and the length of the book made it tough to read. I was not impressed with the book, but I did get to know another viewpoint of another historian, on a subject I knew nothing about.

Gardnerââ¬â¢s Theory of Multiple Intelligence Essay
Many years ago it was quite common to label someone with a high IQ as a ââ¬Å"geniusâ⬠or as being more intelligent than others. Albert Einstein is one of those men who were labeled as a genius because of all that he had accomplished at such a young age. Undeniably, Einsteinââ¬â¢s smarts were extremely remarkable, but records show that he was not the best student. Although Einstein scored extremely well in areas like Math and Physics, it has been noted that in areas like linguistics, he did not excel (Albert Einstein, 2005). Does this make Einstein, any less of a genius? According to Howard Gardnerââ¬â¢s theory of multiple intelligences, a personââ¬â¢s intelligence isnââ¬â¢t necessarily measured in standardized testing or school grades. Gardner identifies that each personââ¬â¢s learning style is different, so the intelligence could excel in any of the eight styles: Linguistic, Musical, Logical, Naturalistic, Visual, Kinesthetic, Interpersonal, and Intrapersonal ( Kowalski & Westen, 2011). This means that someone like Ludwig van Beethoven who may not have been as scholarly as Albert Einstein, can still be considered a genius due to his musical intelligence. The eight different intelligences described by Gardner are what he believed to be the eight strengths in which a person can learn. Gardner believed that because everyone can learn in one of these eight different styles, then they could excel in any of the respective fields. A person who possesses a linguistic intelligence is described as someone who uses words and communication effectively. A person with linguistic intelligence would have excellent auditory skills, and translates everything into words or speech. On the other hand, someone who possesses the learning style of spatial intelligence would be most comfortable with graphics, physical imagery, and visuals (Campbell, 1992). However, someone with a preference to the kinesthetic style of learning would be most comfortable with being hands on. They learn by doing, touching, and anything that involves physical activity, therefore their intelligence might look more like acting out, or role playing. Another learning style of multiple intelligences described by Gardner is naturalistic. Someone who possesses a naturalistic style of learning is more in tune with their surroundings, and focus a lot with what nature is giving them. The naturalistic intelligence was not added to the multiple intelligences until much later. Gardnerââ¬â¢s theory was introduced to naturalistic in response to the nature versus nurture debate, in which a person learns from their surroundings, or environment in which they are in (Sulaiman, Hassan, & Yi, 2011). One of the bigger learning styles in Gardnerââ¬â¢s theory is that of intrapersonal and interpersonal. Intrapersonal is that in which a person learns from themselves. Someone who keeps to themselves and does not get socially involved (Campbell, 1992). On the complete different spectrum, is the interpersonal learning style. Like a social butterfly, interpersonal refers to someone who works well with others, enjoys working in teams, center of attention, and just like they seek attention of others, others seek their attention as well. I personally identify with the interpersonal school of learning the best out of all of the intelligences in Gardnerââ¬â¢s theory. I mostly work well when accompanied by others. I am a team player, and team leader. Others usually seek to me for advice, and I tend to deliver my best results, when working with others. This is the intelligence that is mostly credited with the slang term of ââ¬Å"street smartsâ⬠(Sulaiman, Hassan, & Yi, 2011). Having played sports for a big part of my life, I tend to carry my thoughts as a team. I carry the team and make sure to understand everyone on the team. I always think of others first, and having that one on one interaction is most important to me. Throughout my career, I have found myself to be in leadership roles quite frequentl y, because many others who are not strengthen by the interpersonal intelligence feel as if I can lead better due to the emphasis I put on team work, and my adequate level of communication with the entire team. In the work place I have found this quite helpful, and it has helped me become very successful. The two other intelligences outlined in Gardnerââ¬â¢s theory are that of musical and logical, or mathematical. Musical intelligence is referred to a person when they can relate everything to a rhythm, or sequence. Someone who possesses musical intelligence is also aware of the sounds and music space in their surroundings. Someone with musical intelligence would be aware of dichotic listening, and understand the importance of noise (Kowalski & Westen, 2011). Music is a very big part of my life, what I do, and how I do it. I can remember growing up and not being able to go to sleep until music was playing in the background. I find myself being almost allergic to quite. I tend to do my best work when either I have music playing in the background, or if the TV is on. While in school, I usually found myself while studying, to be singing. I tend to associate rhyme and rhythm to a lot of the new things that I learn. According to Gardner, someone who possesses a musical intelligence is se nsitive to sound, and could hear music, or find the rhythm to anything, even before the words are spoken (Campbell, 1992). The last intelligence in Gardnerââ¬â¢s theory is logical intelligence, or most commonly known as mathematical intelligence (Sulaiman, Hassan, & Yi, 2011). Someone who occupies the logical intelligence are said to think abstractly. They mostly need to learn and form concepts before they can deal with details. They calculate results, enjoy working the mind in the way that really uses the prefrontal vortex more than any other intelligence. Someone with logical thinking is believed to be someone who takes their time to analyze all possible circumstances, and work the problem for an answer. This type of person likes puzzles and word games to stimulate the brain. I identify myself as being a logical thinker due to the fact that one of my strengths is to be analytical. Albert Einstein was believed to belong in this intelligence field, due to his work in mathematics and physics. I find my intelligence to not be at the level of Einstein by any means, but I do relate to his earlier work being proficient in the math field over the linguistic (Albert Einstein, 2005). Since English is not my first language, growing up in the United States, going to school was very difficult for me, but numbers became my safe haven. Having learned numbers at a very young age (according to my teachers, I knew how to add and subtract by the time I was 3) I find myself most attracted to professions in which analytical thinking is required. Having worked as a District Investigator, it was required of me to look at paperwork and identify the fraud, or identify the theft by finding the patterns, or the number sequence. A big part of my job was to analyze transactions, and compare them to video images. Things are always better explained to me if broken down into patterns. Although Gardner divided the intelligences into eight separate categories, his theory believed that a person does not just dominate one intelligence, but rather takes a bit from all of the intelligences collectively. Just like it could be clearly identified that Albert Einstein that dominated the logical intelligence, his work shows that he might have possessed the intrapersonal intelligence as well as the spatial intelligence (Campbell, 1992). Gardner believed that the intelligence of someone could not necessarily be measured, by testing, but mainly by teachings, and learning styles. I feel as if I most identify with musical intelligence, logical intelligence, and interpersonal intelligence. My career thus far would suggest that these fields have brought me much success, but in my recent career change from Criminal Justice to Psychology, I will most likely learn to domain in the linguistic and spatial intelligence.
The Beach/the Storm Descriptive Writing
The Beach. A storm brews above. People escape the beach, quickly grabbing their possessions as rain spits down on them. Music from cafes and fare rides come to a halt as their customers quickly disappear and the happy sounds of laughter echo around the empty beach. A gloomy shadow descends over the sea. Feeble light from the few surviving streetlights and lanterns appear to dim as the dark clouds move across the sky like a creeping panther. Birds silence their song and flee to safer places. Sandcastles with small motes, which surrounded them, are now filled with seawater. Any last remaining footsteps disappear and are quickly buried beneath the sand. The wind teases the scattered rubbishâ⬠¦ picking it up then quickly releasing it again. People shelter in cars waiting for the storm to passâ⬠¦their windscreen wipers furiously fighting against the increasingly powerful rain. Waves rage upon the sand, sending sand back and forth as they go. They crash against the sea wall, shooting upwards and spraying the abandoned cafes and shops. Yachts begin to rock with the waves; they are like a gymnast balancing on a beam about to fall any second. The pier fights against the drowning waves as they attempt to bring it under the surface. Trees surrender at the battering wind, forcing leaves and branches to be torn off their trunks. A bird-usually so in control of its own destiny-fights the beast as it toys with it playfully. The once clear sky is now full of thick cloud, staining the sky a deadly shade of indigo, forever darkening like a lid closing on a box trapping darkness inside it. The saturated clouds start to rumble. Below them, the streets are lifeless as no one dares leave their secure houses for the extreme weather outside. Thunder shakes the clouds, as its loud rumble echoes around the empty beach. The smell of the sea overpowers the old, lingering smell of chips and candyfloss, now only a stench of salt and seaweed are left. Sand storms are whipping up from the shore into the air and circling in the wind. CRASH! Lightning illuminates the sky and forks downwards to strike a boat, like a spear would to catch a fish. The smoke from the explosion is quickly carried off by the wind and the remains of the boat are rapidly dragged under the waves. The weather torments seagulls with the sight of dead fish washing up onto the shore, yet there is no other choice but to stay in hiding. The icy winds whistle around every rock and under every doorway; not even warm houses can be protected from the chill of the storm. On the shore waves crash against rocks and onto the sand, shattering shells with its immense pressure. The lighthouse is left to fend for itself on the cliff, yet its light has no purpose, as the sea is emptyâ⬠¦no one would dare venture out into the vicious sea. * * * * * The sound of rain now overpowers the quietening rumble of thunder. Rays from the sun push through the cloud and release the shadow from the sea. Wind still pulls at the sea splashing waves upon the shore, making pebbles jerk against one another. The trees release tension from their exhausted roots. Birds finally venture out into the unsteady weather after their long wait for food. A tempting scent in the air of brewing coffee comes back and drowns the sea-salt smell. Waves still press against the sea wall sending a light spray of water up into the wind. A final deposit of light drizzle falls into the shore. The sun peeks through the last remaining cloud and lights up the shoreline, to reveal the dazzling sight again. The happy fare-ground tune starts again and the merry-go-round begins to buzz with life again, bringing with it once more the familiar sound of laughter.

Masonry Brick Production Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Masonry Brick Production - Term Paper Example However, scientific improvements have made modern brick plants substantially more competent and have enhanced the overall value of the products. A more comprehensive acquaintance of raw materials and their characteristics, improved control of firing, enhanced kiln designs and more sophisticated mechanization have contributed to advancing the brick production. Brick is produce from clay or shale moulded, dried and fired into a sturdy ceramic creation (Demir & Orhan, 2003). Brick producers handle sustainability by situating manufacturing plants near clay sources to decrease shipping, by recycling of procedure waste, by recovering excavation site where mining has happened, and by practising measures to minimise plant emissions. Most brick are utilized within five hundred miles of a brick production facility. The report provides essential information for understanding masonry demands and requirements (Kermeli, Worrell & Masanet, 2011). Diesel or another type of fuel is appropriate to provide power for crushers, while electricity is essential during this stage to guarantee smooth operation of conveyors. Energy is a fundamental resource in almost every industry, since it drives different functions or production processes. Without energy, these procedures would breakdown, rendering a manufacturing unproductive and incapable of attaining production capacities (Kreh, 2003). Masonry Brick Production uses contemporary kiln cars that run through dryers, powered either by thermal energy or electrical energy source, derived from combusting coal or appropriate fossil fuels (Kreh, 2003). Most of the water in the material mixture is dispersed in drying compartments at a temperature varying from 400C to 2000C. The other energy demanding step in brick production is firing. Just like in other stages, thermal and electrical energy is essential to fire the kilns to temperatures ranging from 10000C to 12000C, based on

Encounter Between Christianity And Other Religions During The 19th And Essay
Encounter Between Christianity And Other Religions During The 19th And 20th Century - Essay Example Christianity is considered as a proselytizing religion. This translates that the followers of these religions have a belief that it is their responsibility to share their religion and try to bring others to their religion. Early Christians emanated from the Jewish tradition, however,Ã they had a belief that the message and teaching of Jesus Christ were supposed to be for all people in the world. They used the transportation networks such as shipping routes, roads in spreading the message of Jesus throughout the Roman empire and areas of the Mediterranean region of North Africa, Western Asia, Southern Europe and the Mediterranean sea. Looking at the map of Christianity in Africa, it is apparent that Palestine, where Christianity first emerged is quite close to Africa in proximity. Owing to this aspect, there is no doubt that Christianity spread to North Africa and Egypt during the first century, especially in Alexandria, which later became a crucial center for the new religion. Pre sently, among Christian scholars and theologians of comparative religion, a great extent of ink has been spilled in an attempt of defining the relationship between Christianity and other non-Christian religions around the world. The fact that majority, if not all non-Christians religions are existing in proximity to the Christian religion, has lent the task of research a new urgency. Today, it is not a surprise to find churches among Buddhist, Hindu, Sick temples or synagogue.

George Washington - Essay Example form of advice to them, to make them aware of political threats the nation might face and to make them understand the political scenario of that time. Analyzed below are the major points of his farewell address. Washington started his address by informing the public that he had declined the presidency for a third term and had decided, according to him, ââ¬Å"to return to that retirement from which I have been reluctantly drawnâ⬠(Washington, as cited in Schmitt, 2004, para. 3). He stated how he had decided not to run the second term and how concern about the survival of the nation and his confidants had convinced him to run for the third term. At the same time, he thanked the People for the support, confidence and honor they had him entitled to. Washington urged upon the fact that the survival of the nation depended very much on the unity of people belonging to all the states. This was important to save their liberty, prosperity and independence both at home and abroad. He warned them of threats posed to their unity from internal and external enemies who wanted to destabilize the nation by alienating one state from another. He told the nation to have pride in being Americans and insisted that they should look down upon ââ¬Å"any appellation derived from local discriminationsâ⬠(as cited in Schmitt, para. 10) because all of them had to fight for the same cause with negligible discriminations of religion, color and race. He insisted that the North, South, East and West of the United States, all complemented one another in order to ensure the security against foreign attacks and sectionalists. He further suggested that only alliances could not serve the purpose as they were always subject to threats. There was the need of a government as a whole. Though the People had the authority to change the government and its constitutions, but once it was established, then it was the firm duty of the nation to obey it and respect its laws. It was their responsibility to fight

Market Development for small businesses in the USA Dissertation
Market Development for small businesses in the USA - Dissertation Example Medical instrument industry is a significant component of an entire health care system. The proposal has started with a background analysis where the entire medical equipment market has been discussed. It is quite important to understand the market itself before entering into a specific market. In the later segments the research methodology would be discussed with research objectives. A brief discussion of the supporting theories has been also provided in this research proposal. Background and Academic Analysis The Medical Equipment Market in USA The medical and dental instrument industry in USA is diverse in nature and technologically dynamic in its operation. The medical devices come up in an extensive range of products used in the health care. The devices can range from mere tongue depressors to some extremely sophisticated diagnostic devices. The US medical and dental apparatus and supplies industry can be segmented in five different products segments including surgical appliance s and supplies, surgical and medical instruments, dental equipment and supplies, electromedical equipments, x-ray apparatus and tubes (AASBEA, n.d., p.1-2). The products of this industry are articulated as follows. Surgical instruments such as clamps, syringes, suture needles and hypodermic, laparoscopic devices, stethoscopes, catheters and blood pressure measuring devices. Appliances such as wheelchairs, bandages, implantable devices and prosthetics. Dental equipments such as hand instruments, drills, plaster, cements, amalgams, dental chairs and sterilizers. X-ray tools and tubes. Electromedical apparatus like patient monitoring equipments, pacemakers etc. Diagnostic tools like ultrasonic scanning instruments, magnetic resonance imaging equipment. Ophthalmic goods like sunglasses, contact lenses and eye-glasses (Shippey, 1995, p.149). The growth of this industry would depend on the expenditures in national health care including the expense to come up with new regulatory norms to e nsure effectiveness and safety in the instruments and appliances. Even the changes in the insurance coverage drive the growth in the medical instrument and appliances market. It is pretty significant to analyse the macro environment of the players operating in this specific industry. The macro environmental driving forces are determining forces to shape up the companyââ¬â¢s strategies to place itself in the market. Macro Environment Analysis ââ¬â PESTLE Analysis Political and Legal Environment ââ¬â The medical instrument industry in US is governed by several regulatory norms; some of them have been quite influential to the industry itself. Such a norm, 1990 Safe Medical Devices Act, redefined the processes to bring in medical instruments to the respective market. This norm was established to ensure the safety and effectiveness of the products pouring into the market. For an instance, manufacturer of certain medical instruments must include the safety and effectiveness dat a in the premarket notification applications. As per the law, the high risk apparatus which had been introduced after the year 1990 are required to have post market surveillanc
